Faces of Jackson County: Aimee Beck

Meet Aimee Beck! She has been married to her husband, Ken, for 24 years. They have three children, Bryson, Gavin, and Logan. Aimee is a proud resident of Maysville, where Aimee has her own boutique business, Aimee’s Closet. She is a passionate advocate for bringing small businesses into Maysville and showing others the hidden treasures in this area of our community.

I have known Aimee for many years, and she is one of the friendliest, most helpful people I have met. We asked Aimee to let us know more about herself and her love of our community.

Question: Please tell us a little bit about your family.
Answer: “My husband, Ken, is a self employed fiber splicer. We will be married 25 years this October! We have 3 beautiful, smart, and almost grown children. Bryson is 21, Gavin is 18 and our daughter, Logan, is 15. The boys are graduates of EJCHS, and Logan is a freshman this year.”

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
A: “I worked as an insurance agent in Gainesville for 15 years before deciding to stay at home after our 3rd child was born in 2006. In 2007, I started my own business named Odds & Ends and worked with local schools & businesses for uniforms and t-shirt orders. In November of 2020, I took a leap, mid COVID, and opened my first brick and mortar boutique, Aimee’s Closet, in my town of Maysville. I also renewed my insurance license this year, just in case I want to revisit that career. I LOVE people. I LOVE serving my community, my church, in any area my kids are involved, and generally just LOVE my town. So both an insurance platform and the boutique keep me plugged into my community. I feel fulfilled when I know I helped settle the nerves of an insured by personally walking them through the process, step by step, to meet each of their needs and with full understanding on their part. I feel equally fulfilled when a sweet lady leaves my shop feeling confident in the outfit I helped her put together, or I can meet the needs of a group of teachers, students, family trip/reunions, or a business, for their event apparel.”

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
A: “Our AMAZING MAYSVILLE has been a sleepy, little, hidden gem, for over 10 years. I longed to see life return to it, so I jumped at the opportunity to open a shop. I have spent the past year talking up our precious town, in hopes that others would want to take a chance on bringing more small businesses here. We have Xaris Cafe, which is my regular Wednesday lunch choice before opening up the shop. As of April 2nd, our newest restaurant, Rubi Jacks, opened and is booming. Now this is my regular Thursday lunch choice! We are looking forward to the opening of another brand new spot, El Paso, within the coming weeks. Xaris Cafe and Rubi Jacks serve breakfast and lunch, and both close at 2pm. I am truly excited for a new restaurant that will offer dinner.”

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
A: “My husband was raised in Pendergrass and attended North Jackson Elementary and Jefferson High School. I am from the East Hall area. Once married, we traveled the first 4 years before settling in the Dry Pond area for 13 years. This home was where we brought our 3 children home to, and they all attended Maysville Elementary. We moved to Maysville in July of 2014.”

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
A: “I have been so connected with our schools through my children and working with each school through my business. I am not sure I could pick just one person, when every single person involved at each school… Board of Education, administration, teachers, coaches, nurses, lunchroom staff, custodial, etc., play such a huge role in our kids lives that I am in awe of each and every one of them!”

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
A: “I had the privilege of traveling around the US for the first 4 years of my marriage. Of course, it was with my husband’s work, therefore, it wasn’t all vacation time, but we lived in a camper and moved every 3-6 months to a new adventure. My idea of pure bliss is Montana. I have been to Montana during Christmas and now, at the top of my bucket list is 3 weeks during summer to fly fish all day, every day!”

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
A: “Hmmm, of course, ‘Steel Magnolias’ is a Southern classic I will watch every time it airs. I do not sit still very much to watch TV, but when I do, I love ‘Criminal Minds’ and ‘Law & Order’ reruns. ‘The Good Doctor’ is my favorite, current show.”

Q: What advice would you give to people?
A: “Be KIND. A smile goes a long way. It will change your own bad mood when your smile changes someone else’s day!”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?
A: “Well, I told you of my Montana goals! But, since we started our lives on the road, we always have said we will return to the road when we retire and visit every state.”

Q: What is your go to band when you cant decide what to listen to?
A: “I’ve never been one to keep up with bands or concerts. My car radio is set with 3 Christian stations, 3 country stations, 1 soft rock, and 1 oldies.”

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
A: “Since I’m not originally from Jackson County, I’m not too familiar with way back, but in my time here, I would say I miss Real Deals and those unique shops the most.”

Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
A: “Oh gosh, everyone I meet becomes a special new friend, and I have tons of lifelong friends. I consider each one FAMILY! If you have met me, you know, I’m gonna talk your head off every time I see you…so, it will never be a quick ‘HEY’ with me. Anyone that has an open hour to spend with me, that’s my person! And, since we currently only have 2 restaurants in Maysville, I’m happy to spend it at either or at El Parian, in Commerce…where they remind me of the modern day CHEERS and it’s the place ‘WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME!'”

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
A: “I love that even though Jackson County is one of the largest counties in Georgia, no matter which side you live, we are still ONE community!”

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
A: “In my camper, hopefully fly fishing in Montana, but at ease, knowing my home is still in AMAZING MAYSVILLE, GA.”

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
A: “Haha, my book is always open, so I’m not sure there is much about me that everyone doesn’t know.”

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
A: “Zion National park in Utah. I ‘retired’ from a job I loved when I got married and moved to Las Vegas on our first adventure. There are no trees in Vegas, and I was so homesick that Ken surprised me with a weekend trip to see the leaves changing in Zion. I thought our mountains were beautiful in October, but Zion looks hand painted, which it is, by my AWESOME GOD!”

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
A: “October, by far! Christmas, by far! Best single day…the first 70 degree day of spring after a cold winter and the first 70 degree day of fall after a scorching summer!”

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
A: “That 70 degree day in Georgia!”

Q: Who inspires you to be better?
A: “My children. They are a daily mirror that sometimes shows me the best part of myself and sometimes shows me the worst part of myself.”

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?
A: :Gardenias and coffee brewing, even though I’m not a big coffee drinker! (I miss old coffee makers since the invention of the Keurig).”

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
A: “Comfort… family, pjs, fluffy blanket…and HOME is anywhere that I have these 3!”
