Faces of Jackson County: Cary Pittman

Meet Cary Pittman! He grew up in Flowery Branch and has been in the ministry for over 25 years. He and his wife, Laura have two children, and their family has lived in Jackson County for the past five years. Cary also is a bus driver in the Jackson County School System.

It has been a pleasure getting to know Cary over the past few years. He has a heart for others and is a constant encourager to everyone around him. We appreciate Cary allowing us to learn more about him and what he loves the most about our community.

 

Question: Tell us a little about yourself and your family.

Answer: “I am Cary Pittman, and I have been the pastor of White Plains Baptist Church for the past 12 years, where we have been blessed to see so many lives changed for God’s glory. I have been in the ministry for over 25 years, working as a youth pastor, missions pastor, and associate pastor before being called to White Plains. I am also blessed to be in our community by driving a school bus for North Jackson Elementary. I love all of my kiddos, who make each day very special. I love spending time with my family on our farm with all of our animals. Everyone that has spent time with me knows that I am crazy about landscaping and the nature that God has provided us that reveals himself to us all every day. I grew up In Flowery Branch, Georgia, and graduated from West Hall High. We have lived in Jackson County for five years.
“I am married to Laura Pittman, who is our worship leader at White Plains and also teaches at North Jackson Elementary. She is also the owner of Restored and Renewed Designs. I have a daughter Cora Pittman (18), who is also on the worship team at our church. Cora graduated from Jackson County High School in 2021 and is currently enrolled in college at Gwinnett Tech, where she will further her education in the field of ultrasounds. Laura and I also have a son, Christian who is 22 and plays the drums for our worship team. He currently works for Geno’s Garage and is an enormous car enthusiast.”

Q: Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?

A: “Currently, I am the Pastor of White Plains Baptist Church and a Bus Driver for North Jackson Elementary. I pray to be able to continue on my current path for the rest of my life. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else other than what I do. I want to follow God in whatever He calls me to do. I love being a part of every life God puts in my path, and I desire to be the best friend anyone could ask for.” 

Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?

A: “Friends, Talmo Grill, and Sliced Pizza.”

Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?

A: “We have actually lived in Jackson County twice in our life. Once for three years and currently for five years.”

Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?

A: “Dover Gooch. Dover was one of the most humble men I have ever met. He loved his country and God. As far as I know, he was the longest active bus driver in Jackson County, and he touched so many lives over the years. Dover also put flags on the White Plains Cemetery for the veterans every service holiday and never wanted any recognition for it.” 

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

A: “Switzerland, because of the beauty that God has created there.”

Q: What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?

A: “’The Andy Griffith Show.’”

Q: What advice would you give to people?

A: “Love God with all your heart and soul and love thy neighbor as yourself.”

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A: “To spend a week in Tahiti.”

Q: What is your go-to band when you can’t decide what to listen to?

A: “Casting Crowns.”

Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?

A: “Maddox Feed and Seed, because I love the laid-back atmosphere and the kindness shown to each and everyone when you walk in the door.

Q: If you could choose anyone alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?

A: “Max Lucado, and we would have lunch at Talmo Grill.”

Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?

A: “The love and support that everyone has for each other in our community, and the small town feel.”

Q: Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years?*

A: “Wherever God leads, but hopefully He keeps me here in the place I love.”

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A: “Everyone knows everything there is to know about me. What you see is what you get each and every day.”

Q: What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?

A: “Riviera Maya, Mexico.”

Q: Favorite month? favorite holiday? and the best single day on the calendar?

A: “October, because I love the fall. Christmas, because of time with family. Valentines Day, because my wife is so BEAUTIFUL

Q: What would you rate a 10 out of 10?

A: “The Bible, God’s Holy Word.”

Q: What is one or two of your favorite smells?

A: “Gardenias and Cinnamon.”

Q: Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A: “Family, Friends, Fresh Cooked Meals.”
